Historic Richmond

Old PalaceRemains of Tudor Palace

The royal connection with Richmond dates from the 12th century and three successive palaces have been built here on the same site The first of these was originally a manor house that was transformed by Edward lll in late 14th century. His grandson Richard ll demolished it in 1394 when his wife Anne died of plague

It was rebuilt by Henry V in 1414 as the second palace but this was destroyed by fire in 1497

The Tudor Palace was the third and grandest. It was the work of Henry Vll who completed it in 1501 and named it Richmond after his earldom in Yorkshire. The area around the palace then adopted that name
